After travelling the length and breadth of Cuba in the last two weeks one member of our intrepid group wrote the following poem to describe her immediate reflections on our amazing experience. Further contributions from others will be posted soon.
Cuban Conundrums
What is an Aussie and what is a Cuban?
Backgrounds unique and yet we’re all human.
The history, the culture, the beliefs we expound
Massaged and moulded – at times turned around.
What do I seek in Latino lands?
WiFi, ‘snob coffee’ and photos not bland?
Moments with locals to find common ground.
Convivial, not judging, yet… conundrums abound.
Do my first world needs create less for them?
Water and power and with waste to contend?
Will our Western ways influence the Cuban regime?
Will the internet juggernaut – revolution rescind?
Only time will tell and I wish them the best.
Cubans certainly deserve a rest
From turmoil and time warp and too much “hostillo”
Good luck from us Aussies – you deserve mas “tranquillo.”
